"In the best movies and stage productions, settings are not merely backdrops for the action, but symbolic extensions of the theme and characterization." ~Louis Giannetti, famous film author and film studies professor at Case Western University
You usually shoot in-studio only when you have to, when the advantages of using a studio outweigh the cost savings of on-location production. For instance, if you need absolutely pristine sound, a sound stage is your best guarantee. If you need to be switching between multiple cameras simultaneously, you'll most likely be working in-studio (or perhaps with a fully equipped remote truck). And if you need to shoot against a chromakey background or cyc wall, you will have to use a studio.
Studio shooting gives the director maximum control over a project and all of its production elements. Studios have been described as the "control freak" director's paradise because nothing is left to chance. They allow a director to "create" a world from scratch and match it to the specific needs of the story, or to use standard pre-built sets that are "tried and true". Sound and lighting are completely manipulable and predictable. No stray street noises, no wind rustle, no clouds, crowds or the need for rescheduling due to inclement weather.
We don't own a studio, which we feel is actually an advantage for our clients. Though that may sound like a rationalization, it is better for our clients that we rent various studios in the Atlanta area. That's because we won't be charging you more than a production company that owns its own studio, and we'll have the flexibility to match your project to the most appropriate studio in town, which is the most cost-effective way to operate. You won't pay more, but you will get the studio that's most appropriate for your project.
For some projects, a perfectly quiet soundstage is a necessity, while others don't require sound to be recorded at all. You may need to shoot against a chroma-key background, a curtain, or with five switchable cameras. Your setup may require room for a studio audience and an overhead crane, or you may need only enough space to light a simple tabletop. Every project is different and we commit to providing you with the best match from among Atlanta 's studios based upon your needs.
Depending upon your particular requirements, we might shoot at an enormous soundstage with all the bells and whistles; a small, MOS (no sound required) studio with an insert table, or anything in between. Our philosophy is never to take a "cookie-cutter approach" to production. We take pride in carefully considering, and tailoring your project to the best production plan.
